Training: Indigenous Permaculture in El Salvador (June 1st Application Deadline) — The communities of Maquilishuat Nahuat peoples and the cooperative of El Mansano will host 10 international participants. The two communities are located in northwestern El Salvador. We will work with community members building a community center, work with children in elementary schools, practice sustainable forestry management, help with composting toilets and water catchment systems, practice traditional and sustainable agriculture, promote biodiesel, and help with adobe and traditional house construction. We'll enjoy home stays with local families and explore the beautiful and dramatic natural surroundings. Note that these are remote rural location. There is no road access directly to the communities. Exhibit and Reception: "Art at the Dump" — Artwork by Henri Marie-Rose and Bessie Kunath will be on exhibit. The exhibit is the culmination of months of scavenging through San Francisco's refuse at the transfer station, better known as "The San Francisco Dump." Marie-Rose's work in metal, wood and glass and has an intrinsically poetic view of life. His show is titled, Ordures et Joie de Vivre (or Trash and the Joy of Life). Kunath's work includes a series of light and shadow boxes, assemblage sculptures, drawings and paintings. Her work is inspired by the sentimental qualities behind our waste. 4th Annual Klamath Salmon Relay Run — In light of the kill of over 72,000 salmon along the Lower Klamath in September 2002, the tribes, several organizations and the youth of communities in the Klamath-Trinity region are coordinating a relay run to be held on May 26th, 27th and 28th. With this event we hope to unite the communities affected by the lack of water and fish in our rivers; raise consciousness of the impacts to our people's well-being, health, and culture with the lack of water and fish in our rivers; and bring attention to the need for better water quality in our rivers to help ensure there won't be a repeat of 2002's catastrophic fish kill. Exhibit and Reception: "Art at the Dump" — Artwork by Henri Marie-Rose and Bessie Kunath will be on exhibit. The exhibit is the culmination of months of scavenging through San Francisco's refuse at the transfer station, better known as "The San Francisco Dump." Marie-Rose's work in metal, wood and glass and has an intrinsically poetic view of life. His show is titled, Ordures et Joie de Vivre (or Trash and the Joy of Life). Kunath's work includes a series of light and shadow boxes, assemblage sculptures, drawings and paintings. Her work is inspired by the sentimental qualities behind our waste. Public Hearing: "Creeks Ordinance" — The Berkeley Creeks Task Force recommendations represent a compromise between the rights of property owners and environmental protection. For example, the recommendations would reduce protection by allowing structures to be built closer to creeks, but would increase protection by preventing patios and decks from being built right up to the edge of a creek. The Berkeley Planning Commission and others are lobbying to further weaken protections. The City Council will likely vote on the Creeks Ordinance recommendations at this hearing. Course: "Natural Building in Community" — Emerald Earth is a rural intentional community. The course will take a whole-systems approach, combining earth, straw, wood, sand and stone in various ways to create inexpensive, efficient hybrid structures. Each week will include 25-30 hours of supervised hands-on building, 2-5 hours of "classroom" time, and an individual research project. Workshop: "Make Your Own Liquid Fertilizers" — Learn how to turn weeds and other natural byproducts into plant fertilizers. Save money and resources by recycling nutrients in your garden.
